WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams track & field team continued their great season with some strong performances at the 2015 Hilton Garden Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., Friday. The Lady Rams opened the two-day meet with some great performances against a crowded field of competition from every division of NCAA competition.
The Lady Rams primarily did their damage on the track where the team had some strong efforts in both sprint and distance events. WSSU junior sprinter Raven Covington set the tone for the team when she recorded a 7.70 to place second in the preliminary round of the women's 60m dash. She was one of four Lady Rams to qualify for the semifinal round of the event as sophomore Ty-Leah Hampton (7.72), senior Nya Michaux (7.82), and senior Tajanel McNeil (7.86) all qualified for the semifinal round of the event. Senior Cruz Vargas-Sullivan also had a great day when she recorded a 9.30 to place 31st in the women's 60m hurdles and qualified for the semifinals of the event.
The stars of the show turned out to be the Lady Rams' distance medley relay team that won the event with a 12:16.58, barely missing the 2015 NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time. In addition to running the anchor leg of the distance medley relay, freshman Domtilla Kiplaget returned to the track for a strong performance in the women's 3,000m run when she placed 15th with a 10.12.60.
The Lady Rams will return to action tomorrow to close out the two-day meet at the JDL Fast Track. For more information on Lady Rams track & field, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
