INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Winston-Salem State Rams will have national glory on their minds next week as a sprinter and the Rams' 4x400m relay team were all selected to compete in the 2019 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championship Meet. Winston-Salem State junior sprinter Cierra Thompson and the Rams' 4x400m relay team were among the field of 754 participants selected for the meet. The student-athletes were selected after reaching provisional qualifying standards established for their respective events and ranking among the top competitors in the nation.
Thompson earned her selection after running one of the top ten times in the nation in the women's 100m dash. She recorded a career-best 11.64 at the Mount Olive First Chance & Multis Meet last weekend. Her selection comes on the heels of her winning the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) 100m dash and helping the team claim the 2019 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. She will enter the meet as the eighth ranked sprinter in the event.
Along with Thompson will be the Rams' 4x400m relay team. The squad earned their selection after a surge in the final weeks of the season. The team ran a 3:42.55 to win the event at the Mount Olive Final Qualfier, Sunday afternoon. The team of sophomore Amique Willis, sophomore Victoria Porter, sophomore Tamia McLean, and sophomore Aaliyah Burton ran the 13th best time in the nation. The Rams will enter the meet as the eighth seed in their event.
The Rams will head to Kingsville, Texas to take part in the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championship Meet from May 23rd - 25th at Javelina Stadium and it is hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville University. The preliminary round of the women's 100m dash is scheduled to take place, Thursday, May 23rd at 6:55 p.m. while the preliminary round of the women's 4x400m relay will take place, Friday, May 24th at 8:10 p.m.
