CHARLOTTE, NC- The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-7) gave a solid effort, but the team fell short in a three-set loss to the Augusta (Ga.) Jaguars (3-0), Saturday afternoon at the Queens (N.C.) Invitational. The Rams gave a solid effort in the loss, but some offensive miscues and some staunch Jaguar defense cost the Rams in the 25-13, 25-12, and 25-15 loss.
The Rams had some highs and lows through the match. As a team, the Rams totaled 17 kills, but the team suffered from 17 attack errors in the loss. WSSU junior outside hitter Ytae Cobb led the way with six kills in the match while freshman Danyale Berry added four kills. She also had three service aces and eight kills in the match as well. Sophomore setter Brittany Carpenter added 12 assists. Freshman Gabrielle Azar added 11 digs.
The opening set saw the Rams come out early, but the team allowed some Jaguar runs that they could not overcome. The Rams jumped out early with an 8-7 lead. However, the Rams allowed a 12-1 run to the Jaguars to fall behind, 19-9. The Rams would make some noise with back-to-back points later in the set, but fell 25-13.
The second set was a tougher one for the Rams. The team struggled to bounce back after a slow start left WSSU trailing, 5-18. The Rams would make a late run with a 5-2 rally, but the effort was not enough as the Rams ended the set with the 25-12 loss.
In the third set, the Rams had a better outing, but it was not enough as they took the match loss. Once again, the Rams got a strong start, keeping the Jaguars within two points, 6-8. However, the Rams later allowed a 6-1 run by the Jaguars to fall behind, 8-20. From there, the team had a solid 4-2 run, but the effort was not enough as the Rams ended the day with the 25-15 loss.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-7. The team will return to action, tomorrow when the team takes on the Converse College Valkyries in a 10:00 a.m. match at the Queens (N.C.) Invitational.
