CHARLOTTE, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-8) gave a solid effort, but the team fell short in a hard-fought three-set loss to the Converse Valkyries (2-5), Saturday morning. The Rams were strong at points during the match, but the team could not get the points they needed in the tough, 25-17, 25-10, 25-21 loss.
The Rams had a solid overall effort in the loss. The Rams had a strong offensive effort with 27 kills, but 27 attack errors proved costly to the Rams. WSSU freshman outside hitter Danyale Berry nearly had a double-double with eight kills and eight digs to lead the Rams.
The opening set saw a slow start by the Rams with the team falling behind early. However, they would soon kick things into gear to make the set interesting. After falling behind, 3-10 , to open the set, the Rams stormed back in a big way with a seven-point rally to tie the set, 12-12. Things would soon get tough for the Rams as the team allowed an 8-1 run by the Valkyries to fall behind, 14-22. The Rams kept pace with the Valkyries for the remainder of the set, but took the loss, 25-17.
The second set was a tough one for the Rams. The team got started strong, but they soon ran into some struggles to take the loss. The Rams got started in a big way, tying the set, 6-6, after a Cobb kill. A 9-1 run by the Valkyries proved to be too much for the Rams to recover from as the team ended the set with a 25-10 loss.
The third set saw the best effort of the day for the Rams. After opening the set within three points, 8-11, the Rams went on a 5-1 run that included an Azar service ace and a Berry kill. The effort left the team with a 13-12 lead over the Valkyries. The teams kept things close, 17-17 before Converse went on a 5-1 run to leave WSSU trailing, 22-18. The young Rams responded in a big way, however. The team went on a 3-1 run to pull to within two points, 21-23, but Converse recorded back-to-back scores to end the set and the match, 25-23.
