Rams Take a Three-Set Win Over Elizabeth City State Vikings


WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (6-10, 5-0 CIAA) remained undefeated in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play when the team took a three-set win over the Elizabeth City State Vikings (0-10, 0-5 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Rams had to claw their way to victory as the team overcame a feisty Vikings squad.

The Rams took the win behind a solid overall team effort. The Rams took the match behind a stellar service game. As a team, the Rams totaled 14 service aces in the match. It was sophomore middle blocker Danyale Berry who led the way for the team with five service aces and nine kills in the match. The performance was so impressive that the Rams needed just 28 kills to take the three-set match victory. Junior outside hitter Ytae Cobb added five total blocks (none solo) with three service aces of her own in the match.

The opening set of the match saw a dominating performance from the Rams. The team opened the set with a 4-1 and never looked back. After allowing the Vikings to tie the set, 13-13, the Rams took things over in a major way, including scoring eight straight points on their way to allowing just two more points to the Vikings to claim the 25-15 first set win.

The second set was more competitive set of the match. The two team played to a 7-7 tie to open the set. From there, the Rams would mount a strong push that left the team on top, 18-11. Later in the set, ECSU would storm back with a four-point run to cut the WSSU lead down to three points, 23-20. The Ram swould no relent as they Rams took a Berry kill and a block from Cobb and junior outside hitter Haley Tatu to ended the 25-20 set win for the Rams.

The third set was another competitive one, but in the end, the Rams were able to finish with the three-set victory. The set was a heated one as Elizabeth City State took an 18-17 lead over the Rams. However, the Rams stepped up in a big way with a 7-1 run that included five straight points. The run included a Cobb service ace and a Berry kill. It was an ECSU ballhandling error that ended the match.

With the win, the Rams improve to 6-10 overall and 5-0 in CIAA play. The team will return to action, tomorrow they take on the Virginia State Trojans in a 1:30 p.m. match.
