ORANGEBURG, SC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-5, 2-1 CIAA) continued their strong play of late when the team took a three-set road win over the Claflin Panthers (2-6, 1-2 CIAA), Friday evening. The Rams put on a dominant performance when the took the win as they won the match, 25-16, 25-18, and 25-15.
It was a tremendous defensive performance that keyed the win for the Rams. In the match, WSSU held their opponents to under 20 points in each set of the match to claim the win. As a team, the Rams totaled 46 kills while holding the Panthers to just 20 kills in the match. WSSU senior outside hitter Ytae Cobb led the way for the Rams with 13 kills in the match. She also added two service aces as well. Senior middle blocker Alexis Gregson-Hammond added nine kills in the match as well. Defensively, WSSU sophomore setter Rylee Wilson led the way for the Rams with 13 digs in the match. Freshman middle blocker Niyonna McIntyre added three blocks (none solo).
The Rams set the tone early with an impressive performance in the opening set of the match. After taking a 14-9 lead over the Panthers, the Rams broke out for a six-point run to go ahead, 20-9 over the Panthers. From there, the Rams eased up a bit as they were outscored 7-5 in the final moments of the match. However, the Rams held on for the 25-16 win.
The second set was the most competitive one of the night, but the Rams still came out on top. After claiming a 9-8 lead over the Panthers, the Rams took over the set with another six-point run that put the team on top, 15-8. After allowing back-to-back points to the Panthers, the Rams continued their domination with five more unanswered points and a 20-10 lead. After taking a 24-14 lead over the Panthers, the Rams once again allowed a late Claflin run, but a kill from Gregson-Hammond ended the set and gave the Rams a 25-18 set win.
The third set saw the Rams close the match in style. The two teams played to a 10-10 tie early in the set, but WSSU went on a 10-4 run to take a 20-14 lead. The Rams closed the match with a five-point run to take the win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team will return to action, tomorrow when the team takes on the Bowie State Bulldogs and the Elizabeth City State Vikings at the CIAA Volleyball Round Up.
