ORANGEBURG, SC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-5, 4-1 CIAA) put on a show when the team rolled to a three-set win over the Bowie State Bulldogs (2-8, 0-4 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Rams took the win behind some great effort both offensively and defensively in the match.
The Rams combined a potent offensive attack with some staunch defense to claim the win. As a team, the Rams totaled 36 kills in the match while holding the Bulldogs to just 13 kills. Junior outside hitter Tailar Jackson led the way for the Rams with a double-double effort. She had 13 kills with 12 digs to lead the Rams in the match. Junior right side hitter Danyalle Berry added seven kills.
The first set was the only competitive set of the match as the Rams showed their heart to claim a 25-23 win in the set. The Rams had to dig deep early as they found themselves trailing, 6-1 to open the set. However, the Rams would go on a 10-5 run to tie the set 11-11. The Rams soon found themselves trailing, 17-13 after another BSU run. It was then that the Rams would kick things into gear as the team stormed back to tie the set 20-20 on a BSU service error. The Rams fell behind just once more in the set, trailing, 22-23 before scoring three unanswered points and winning the set on a bad set by the Bulldogs.
There was much less drama in the final two sets with the Rams taking the wins, 25-9 and 25-10. The highlight of the second set came when the Rams had a nine-point run in the set and cruised on their way to the win. In the third set, the Rams played to a 6-6 tie before outscoring the Bulldogs 19-4 to claim the win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team will return to action, Thursday when the host the Shaw Lady Bears in a 6:00 p.m. match at Whitaker Gymnasium.
