Final Stats
Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams scored on the second play from scrimmage and never looked back as they ran their way to an easy 28-9 victory over the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC.
Martin Hicks, who came into the contest needing only 136 net yards rushing to record his third consecutive 1,000 yard season, earned 70 yards on two plays as he ran his way into the endzone from 57 yards out to put the Rams up 7-0 only 26 seconds into the game.
Hicks' would suffer a twisted ankle that kept him out of the remainder of the half on WSSU's next offensive series which forced the Rams to go to their other offensive dynamo in running back Jed Bines.
Bines would not disappoint as he capped an 11 play, 71 yard drive with a three yard touchdown run with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter to put the Rams ahead 14-0.
Johnson C. Smith would narrowly avoid the first half shutout as Louis Collins nailed a 28 yard field goal with only one second remaining in the first half to make the score 14-3 heading into the intermission.
The second half would be more of the status quo for the two teams as Monte Purvis used a seven yard quarterback keeper to give the Rams another touchdown at the 14:24 mark of the fourth quarter to put WSSU ahead 21-3 and all but secure the victory.
JCSU was not done as backup quarterback Rodreques Patterson completed a 28 yard touchdown pass to Sheldon Nunn only three minutes after the Bines touchdown to cut the WSSU lead to 12 points at 21-9 as the Golden Bulls looked to mount a comeback.
The home-team Rams would end the Golden Bull comeback bid three minutes later when Jed Bines caped a six play, 41 yard drive with his second touchdown run of the evening when he sprinted his way into the endzone from 29 yards out to secure WSSU's 19 point win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 5-4 overall and move to 5-1 in the CIAA. The loss drops Johnson C. Smith to 0-9 overall and 0-5 in the CIAA and moves their losing streak to a nations' worst 23 games.
WSSU returns to action next weekend, October 29, 2005 at 2:00 pm as they host Saint Augustine's College at Bowman Gray Stadium for Homecoming.
