Lady Rams Fall In Overtime To Claflin College 56-49

Nov. 26, 2005

Final Stats

Durham, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams were outscored 14-7 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at McClendon-McDougald Gymnasium in Durham, NC as they dropped a 56-49 decision to Claflin College in second round action from the North Carolina Central University BC Powder Thanksgiving Basketball Classic.

The two teams combined for only 39 first-half points as WSSU trailed Claflin College 20-19 heading into the locker room for the halftime intermission.  Both teams turned in dismal shooting performances during the game's first 20 minutes of play as WSSU connected on seven of 32 field goal attempts (21.9%) and Claflin hit nine of their 30 field goals (27.9%).

The second half only got worse for Claflin as they would shoot 17.9% from the field in the game's second period as WSSU's defense turned up the pressure, allowing the Lady Rams to retake a lead midway through the second half.

However, despite the poor shooting from Claflin, the two teams headed to overtime tied at 42-42 as both teams looked for the win.

The overtime period was unkind to the Lady Rams as Shalonda Carter's layup with three second remaining was WSSU's only field goal of the extra session as WSSU fell in defeat 56-49.

Shalonda Carter led all WSSU scorers with 10 points as she was the only Lady Ram to score in double figures.  Taffika Haynes led Claflin with 11 points.

WSSU returns to action on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at 5:30 pm as they take on the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University in Bowie, MD as the Lady Rams open CIAA league play.
