PETERSBURG, VA - Despite having a one-point lead with 59 seconds left in the contest, the Lady Rams could not hang on as the Virginia State University Lady Trojans dropped WSSU to 7-12 overall by handing the Lady Rams a 68-62 loss in Petersburg, VA on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Rams fell behind early in the contest and trailed for the majority of the game, yet used a run in the late stages of the second half to eventually take a one-point lead with just under one minute remaining in the contest.
The Lady Ram comeback was due in part to an outstanding second half of free throw shooting as WSSU converted on 13 of 15 second-half free throw attempts (.860) to put themselves in a position to win the game.
However, the home-team Lady Trojans capitalized on a late WSSU turnover and hit their free throws down the stretch as they earned the 68-62 win, their second overall victory of the season and their first CIAA win.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 7-12 overall and drop to 2-5 in the CIAA (1-1 CIAA West). The Lady Trojans improve to 2-16 overall and move to 1-5 in the CIAA with the win.
The Lady Rams were led by forward Shalonda Carter who tallied her third straight double-double as she recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Janet Robinson chipped in with 12 points and four rebounds and Keoshia Worthy tallied 12 points and three rebounds in a losing effort.
WSSU will return to action on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at 6:00 pm as they play host to the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University at the Joel Coliseum Annex as the Lady Rams resume CIAA Western Division play.
