Final Stats
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University broke their six game losing streak that dated back to January 21, 2006 on Tuesday evening at the LJVM Coliseum Annex as they recovered from a 12-point second-half deficit to earn a 67-60 victory over the Livingstone College Lady Blue Bears in CIAA Western Division women's basketball action.
The Lady Rams, a team that was looking for their first victory in the month of February, came out of the locker room hot as they shot 54% from the field during the first 10 minutes of the game as WSSU jumped out to an early double-digit lead.
The Lady Blue Bears responded with a 14-4 run over the next six minutes as they evened the contest and set up a feverish final four minutes of the half.
WSSU took a five-point lead to the locker room at halftime, yet saw that cushion evaporate during the first five minutes of the second half as Livingstone mounted a run that propelled them ahead of host-team WSSU by as many as 12 points midway through the second period of play.
The Lady Rams again bounced back, and behind a solid performance from the WSSU bench, mounted a charge that would earn them their first win in seven tries.
Cherena Douglass, a key reserve, chipped in with three points and four rebounds as well as a pair of assists, a steal and a block in only nine minutes of play as she and other Lady Ram bench players helped to shut down the feisty Blue Bears en route to the 67-60 win.
WSSU was led by Shalonda Carter who tallied 14 points and five rebounds as she led three Lady Rams into double figures. Livingstone College was paced by Jennifer Miller who tallied a game-high 18 points in the loss.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 8-17 overall and improve to 3-11 in the CIAA (2-6 CIAA West). The Lady Blue Bears drop to 6-17 overall and fall to 2-11 in the CIAA with the loss (1-7 CIAA West).
WSSU returns to action on Sunday, February 19, 2006 at 1:00 pm in a contest versus the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University at Capel Arena in Fayetteville, NC.
