FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University tied their longest win streak of the season on Sunday afternoon as they won their second consecutive game, earning an important 74-57 road victory over the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University in the process.
The Lady Rams used a hot-shooting first half in which they hit 16 of their 28 field goal attempts (.571) to open up their largest halftime lead of the season as they led the Lady Broncos 40-23 at the intermission.
In stark contrast to the hot-shooting Lady Rams, the Lady Broncos hit only eight of their 36 first-half field goal attempts as they shot a frigid 22.2% from the field.
The WSSU lead grew to as many as 21 points with under one minute to play in the contest as the Lady Broncos never mounted a challenge in their bid to cut into the lead.
WSSU continued to scorch the nets at a 54.5% clip while the Lady Broncos never broke the 30% shooting plateau.
WSSU was led by Shalonda Carter who recorded 18 points and 17 rebounds in the contest. Candace Saunders tallied a career-high 18 points as she and Janet Robinson (14 points) joined Carter in double-figures.
Despite committing 27 turnovers, the Lady Rams earned the win as they improve to 9-17 overall and 4-11 in the CIAA. More importantly, WSSU improves to 3-6 in the CIAA Western Division.
The loss drops Fayetteville State 12-13 overall and relegates them to 7-7 in the CIAA and 5-5 in the CIAA Western Division.
WSSU returns to action on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at the LJVM Coliseum Annex as they face the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University in the Lady Rams' final regular-season game before the start of the 2006 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
