WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-16) took a three-game sweep of the St. Augustine's Falcons (6-17, 4-7 CIAA) Tuesday evening. The Lady Rams snapped a four-match losing streak and gave the team its first season sweep of a team since the team swept the same St. Augustine's team in 2004.
The win was a big one for WSSU head coach Douglas Hunter, who is a 1999 graduate of St. Augustine's and was an assistant coach on the Falcons coaching staff for seven seasons. During his tenure, Hunter was joined on that staff with current Falcons head coach Covance Mortimer.
The win took a hard fought effort by the Lady Rams who took the matches by scores of 30-19, 30-27, and 30-20. Sophomore hitter Annika Barnwell led the way for the Lady Rams with 16 kills and a pair of service aces. She also led the team with seven digs as well. Freshman hitter Ashley Harris added eight kills as well. Junior Valentina Pushkina had an historic contest with 37 assists in the match. Her 10th assist of the match, the 26th point to sophomore Lore McBroom, gave Pushkina 1,200 assists in her career as a Lady Ram. Her career total now stands a 1,227 assists.
Curby Rogers and Brittany Watts combined to lead the way for the Falcons with six kills each in the match. Tieayrra Glover coordinated the Falcon attack with 25 assists in the match.
The Lady Rams will have a week to rest up before facing their local rival North Carolina A&T Aggies in a 7:00 p.m. match on next Tuesday evening.
