WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-10) had their first winning streak in over three seasons snapped when the team took a 3-0 loss to the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Lady Hawks (10-6), Saturday morning at the 2008 Lady Rams Invitational. The Lady Rams couldn't overcome an aggressive Lady Hawk attack that totaled 10 service aces and 40 total kills in the match.
The Lady Rams had a tough time finding their own offense in the match, totaling 13 kills in the match. The team took the loss by scores of 25-11, 25-10, and 25-13. WSSU junior Annika Barnwell and senior Valentina Pushkina led the way for the Lady Rams with four kills each in the match. Fellow junior Lore McBroom added a team-high eight digs in the loss.
With the loss, the Lady Rams, who were tied with UMES for the top seed in the tournament, fall to the #2 seed. The squad will take on the St. Augustine's Falcons, who defeated Savannah State in a close 3-2 match for the #3 seed.
The Lady Rams will need to defeat St. Augustine's in order to advance to the championship match of the tournament.
