Lady Rams Fall Short in Tough Four-Set Loss to Saint Augustine's

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (9-12, 9-5 CIAA) were outgunned in a hard-fought loss to the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons (14-6, 11-2 CIAA), Monday evening. The Lady Rams and Lady Falcons played some top notch offense as both teams combined for 90 kills in the match. Though the Lady Rams had no problems getting kills in the match, the team struggled to get the points that mattered in the tough loss, 26-24, 16-25, 13-25, and 26-28.

As a team, the Lady Rams totaled 42 kills in the match, but the combination of a tough Lady Falcons defense that amassed 56 digs and 33 WSSU attack errors proved critical as the Lady Rams ended the night with the tough loss. WSSU senior hitter Ashley Harris led the way for the Lady Rams with 15 kills on 52 total attacks in the match. Senior libero Erica Cole added a team-high 16 digs in the match.

The Lady Rams were able to get things started strong as the team took a clutch 26-24 win in the opening set. After battling to a 19-19 tie, the Lady Rams were able to get a strong run going and pulled ahead, 22-19, but a late Saint Augustine's run would tie the match 24-24. The Lady Rams would hold on for the win with a kill by senior hitter Georgette Allen and a bad Lady Falcons set.

After the first set battle, the Lady Rams couldn't find the energy to match the Lady Falcons as the team took a 25-16 loss in the set. After tying the set 8-8 the Lady Rams allowed a 9-2 run that put the team behind 17-11. The team would get no closer and ended the set with the loss. The third set was another struggle by the Lady Rams as the team took the 25-13 loss that included an 8-1 run by the Lady Falcons to open the set.

The Lady Rams found their groove in the fourth set with the team giving all that they had in the set. Once again, the Lady Rams took a late lead, but fell short in the final set of the match. The Lady Rams jumped ahead of the Lady Falcons, 24-21, but allowed three straight points on Lady Falcons kills to tie the match. In the end, the Lady Rams mounted a furious attack effort, but the Saint Augustine's defense didn't allow anything through as the Lady Rams took the tough 26-28 loss.
