ANDERSON, SC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-0) remain undefeated for the season as they defeated the Trojans of Anderson University (0-2), 54-46 Monday evening. In a game that began a little sluggish for the Lady Rams, the team eventually settled down and took control of the game. The Lady Rams were led by a breakout performance on both ends of the floor from junior guard Courtney Medley who led the team with 18 points while adding four rebounds and three steals.
The Lady Rams had a strong team performance on both ends of the floor, forcing 19 Trojan turnovers while holding the rebounding advantage, 38-33. The Lady Rams also held a 6-8 edge in steals. It was junior guard Courtney Medley who led the way for the Lady Rams with 18 points and four rebounds while senior forward Vontisha Woods added 14 points with eight rebounds.Junior forward Chloe Morse also had a strong effort off the bench adding six points and four rebounds.
The Lady Rams got off to a slow start in the early goings of the first half, missing their first few shots from the field. The Trojans took advantage of the WSSU sluggish start and jumped out to an early 9-3 lead, but the Lady Rams were able to work their way back into the game, holding the home team to just four points over a four minute span and claiming a four point lead, 17-13 with just under five minutes left in the half. The team would go on to push their lead to seven points, 24-17, but a late Anderson three-pointer left the Lady Rams ahead, 24-20 at the half. It was the Lady Rams' defensive effort that powered the team to the first half lead, forcing 11 Trojan turnovers in the first half.
Much like the first half, the Lady Rams got off to a slow start offensively, but held on to their lead with strong defensive play and rebounding. However, the Lady Rams' offensive struggles would cost them the lead as Anderson tied the game, 26-26 at the 16:05 mark. However, the Lady Rams hit their stride late in the game. With fewer than ten minutes to play, the Lady Rams got a huge boost off the bench from junior guard Courtney Medley, who led an 8-0 WSSU run that gave the Lady Rams a commanding 34-26 lead in the game. Down the final stretch, the Trojans were able to cut the Lady Rams' lead down to four points, 47-43, but the Lady Rams were able to stand their ground and hold on for their second straight road win to open the season.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to a perfect 2-0 on the road after going 0-15 in road games last season. The Lady Rams take to the court again next Monday as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to do battle with the Big Red of Cornell University.
