WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-6, 3-2 CIAA) gave it their all, but came up short in a three-set loss to the Fayetteville State Broncos (5-1, 5-1 CIAA), Wednesday evening. The Lady Rams battled hard in all three sets of the match, but costly errors and a tough Bronco opposing team were a bit too much for the Lady Rams.
As a team, the Lady Rams were aggressive offensively, totaling 23 kills in the match, but the team's 22 total attack errors and nine receiving errors slowed the team's efforts in the hard-fought loss. The WSSU senior trio of hitter Ashley Harris, middle blocker Georgette Allen, and hitter Erica Cole led the Lady Rams attack. Allen led the team with seven kills while Harris and Cole added six kills each. Sophomore setter Kiara Brown had a strong evening with 16 assists and five service aces.
The Lady Rams got off to a slow start in the first set, a 25-15 loss. The team kept the set close through the midway point, holding the Broncos within reach, 12-12, but the team allowed a 13-3 run by the Broncos. The Lady Rams allowed six straight points to the Broncos to end the set.
The second set saw a much better effort by the Lady Rams as the team jumped out to an 18-10 lead. The run included a pair of 4-0 WSSU runs. The Lady Rams pushed their lead to 23-18, but allowed a 6-1 run that tied the set 24-24. The Lady Rams allowed a pair of WSSU receiving errors, including a substitution infraction by the Lady Rams that cost the team the final point of the set.
In the third set, the team continued to battle taking a 19-19 tie late in the set. However, a 5-2 run by the Broncos ended the WSSU threat and sealed the Lady Rams loss.
The Lady Rams will return to action this weekend when the team takes part in the second weekend of the 2010 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round Up hosted by Fayetteville State.
