Sept. 23, 2010

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (7-8, 7-4 CIAA) were just too much for the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (4-8, 4-6 CIAA) as the team took dominating three-set home win, Thursday evening. The Lady Rams clicked on all cylinders in the win, with 34 total kills and 11 service aces while allowing just 16 kills to the Golden Bulls.

The Lady Rams utilized a relentless attack to power past their opponents as three WSSU players recorded at least five kills in the match. It was the WSSU senior trio of outside hitters Ashley Harris, Erica Cole, and middle hitter Georgette Allen who led the Lady Rams' attack in the match. Harris led the team with 10 total kills and added three service aces in the win while Allen added seven kills and a team-high four service aces. Cole led the WSSU defensive effort with a team-high seven digs in the game as well.

Though the dominant team for most of the match, the Lady Rams didn't look the part in the early going. It was Johnson C. Smith who jumped out to an early 4-1 lead over the Lady Rams in the opening set. It was when sophomore setter Kiara Brown took the serve that the Lady Rams ran off nine unanswered points to take control of the set and took a 10-4 lead. With the lead well in hand, the Lady Rams cruised to the opening set win in spite of a late run by the Golden Bulls.

The second set opened in a similar fashion with Johnson C. Smith playing the match close and tying the set at 7-7. However, redshirt-sophomore Kameryn Craig held serve as the Lady Rams ran off eight unanswered points to put the Lady Rams into the driver's seat, 20-14. The Lady Rams would only allow three more points to the Golden Bulls and took the second set win.

The Lady Rams dominated the final set of the match and rolled to the victory. After opening the set with an 8-2 run, the Lady Rams continued their strong play, pushing their lead to double-digits on an Allen kill that forced a JCSU timeout. Though the Golden Bulls would battle back, the WSSU momentum was too much as the Lady Rams held on for the victory.

After playing two matches this week, the Lady Rams will get a well deserved break before their next match as the team heads to Lumberton, North Carolina to take on the UNC-Pembroke Braves.
