Box Score BLUEFIELD, WV – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (5-5) continued to roll, Saturday when the team notched an 82-65 win over the Bluefield State Blues (2-8), Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lady Rams closed out a spectacular offensive effort, shooting at least 50% from the floor in both games of the two-day Herb Sims Classic.
For the second straight game, the WSSU offense took center stage as the Lady Rams shot 50.8% from the floor, following up yesterday's 54% field percentage in their win over Ohio Valley University. WSSU senior guard Courtney Medley led the way for the Lady Rams with 18 points in the game, while junior forward LaQuanda Williams had another breakout effort with 17 points and six rebounds in the game. Junior guard Jasmine Newkirk had another great effort with 16 points in the game as well.
The game was close early with the two teams battling to an 11-11 tie through the first five minutes of play. It was then that the Lady Rams took control of the game, jumping out to a 21-14 lead with just under 12 minutes left in the first half. The team mounted a 10-3 run to take control of the game. The two teams would continue to battle until late in the half when the Lady Rams jumped out to a 41-32 lead at the half.
It was in the second half that the Lady Rams would take control of the game as the team pushed their lead to double-digits early and never looked back. The Lady Rams jumped ahead by 15 points, 50-35 with just over 17 minutes left to play. The Blues would battle back, however, cutting the WSSU lead down to six points with just under 13 minutes left to play. Though challenged, the Lady Rams would not let up as the team took its largest lead of the game, 78-59 with just over three minutes left to play. Down the stretch of the game, the Lady Rams held on for the 82-65 win.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 5-5 overall and have closed out the non-conference portion of their 2011-12 schedule. The team will return to action with a home Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) game against the Virginia State Trojans, Thursday, January 5th.
