WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams (26-17, 19-6 CIAA) came up short in a tough 4-1 loss to the Chowan Hawks (26-14, 22-3 CIAA), Thursday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. Though the Rams played a solid game on both sides of the ball, the team could not hold off a late rally by the Hawks to take the tough loss.
The game was a tough defensive struggle as the Rams and Hawks battled to a 1-1 tie after the first six innings of play. After allowing a fourth inning run to the Hawks, the Rams answered on a fifth-inning RBI groundout by junior infielder Jordan Graham that scored freshman infielder Scott Wells. The 1-1 score remained until the Hawks scored three seventh-inning runs to seal the WSSU loss.
Offensively, the Rams managed just three total hits in the game. The loss came in spite of a solid pitching effort by junior Brice Rivenbark (4-4) who threw all seven innings with 10 strikeouts and just three walks. Through the first six innings, he allowed just four Chowan hits, but allowed four in the seventh inning.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 19-6 in the CIAA. For more information on Rams baseball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
