Rams Rally for 12-10 Win Over Virginia State

THOMASVILLE, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams (22-14, 15-4 CIAA) had to put on their rally caps to pull out a 12-10 win over the Virginia State Trojans (16-15, 9-8 CIAA), Sunday afternoon at Finch Field in Thomasville, N.C. The Rams battled back from an early 10-0 deficit with 12 unanswered runs to score the win and remained in second place in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

When challenged, the Rams answered the call with a strong effort at the plate with 10 total team hits. Freshman infielder Scott Wells led the way with two hits and three runs scored, including a solo home run, in three at-bats. He also added an RBI. Sophomore infielder German Reyes added three hits and three RBI in four at-bats.

The Rams fell into some struggles early with the Trojans scoring 10 runs in the first three innings of play. The Trojans scored three opening inning runs, followed by a seven third-inning runs. However, the Rams had an answer with 12 runs in the final four innings of the seven-inning game. WSSU struck in the third inning when freshman infielder Joshua Wyant scored on a decoy steal attempt by junior outfielder Dominique Fitzgerald. The Rams stayed hot in the fourth inning with five runs, including a two-run home run by junior catcher Michael Robbins.

The WSSU rally continued in the fifth inning when the team scored four runs and tied the game when Robbins stole home. A Wells sixth-inning home run gave the Rams their first lead of the game while a Reyes RBI bunt single ended the scoring in the game.

WSSU freshman pitcher Brandon Christ (3-0) took the pitching win with two innings on the mound. He pitched two innings with three hits allowed, no runs, and two strikeouts. Sophomore John Markley came in to pick up the save (1).
