HIGH POINT, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams (30-21) fell short
as the team took a pair of losses to the West Virginia State
Yellowjackets (21-14), Saturday afternoon. The Rams gave some great
efforts on both sides of the ball, but the team faded late in both
games. The Rams took an 8-2 loss in the opening game and a
heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the second game.
The Rams' struggles began early in the first game as the team
fell behind 4-1 through the first four innings of the game. The
Rams kept the game in reach, holding the Yellowjackets scoreless
until the seventh inning, but the team allowed four runs to their
opponents and managed just one run of its own to take the 8-2 game
one loss. As a team, the Rams managed just six hits with freshman
outfielder Andrew Smith
recording a team-high two.
The second came was a much closer affair as the Rams jumped
ahead early on a solo home run by junior catcher Michael Robbins
in the third inning. The Yellowjackets answered, however, with a
fourth inning run. The Rams were able to turn up their defensive
efforts and held their opponents scoreless until the final seventh
inning, but an RBI single snuck its way through the WSSU defense
and sealed the Rams' loss.
The Rams won't wait long for redemption, however, as the team
will host the Mount Olive Trojans at Ed Price Field in a Monday
afternoon doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. For more information on Rams
