MARS HILL, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-5) offense could find no answers for a tough Mars Hill Lions (4-1) defense in a three-set road loss, Saturday afternoon. The points were hard for the Lady Rams to come by as the team fell, 25-8, 25-14, and 25-17 for their fifth straight loss to open the season.
As a team, the Lady Rams totaled 23 kills in the match, but were slowed down by 27 attack errors. The attack errors proved costly to the Lady Rams and negated a strong defensive effort as the WSSU defense totaled 50 digs and eight team blocks. WSSU freshman Brittany Rich led the Lady Rams defense with 13 digs while junior middle blocker De Ann Smith added four total blocks as well. Three WSSU players totaled five kills each to lead the way for the Lady Rams.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 0-5 on the season. The team will look to snap their early season slump at the 2011 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up in Hampton, Va. The Lady Rams will open play against the Chowan Hawks, followed by a match against the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings.
