WSSU Rams Fall To Saint Augustine's Falcons, 61-55

Box Score

RALEIGH, NC -- The cold shooting Rams could not overcome the turnover bug, and faultered on both ends of the floor, as the Saint Augustine's Falcons upset the Winston-Salem State University Rams, 61-55 at Emery Gymnasium on the Saint Augustine's campus.

With the loss WSSU falls to 15-3 overall, 7-1 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the Southern Division, and falls one game behind Shaw University and Johnson C. Smith who are both 2-0 in the division.  Saint Augustine's College moves to 11-7 overall, 6-2 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the Southern Division.

Winston-Salem State was able to gain control of the game in its early stages, and the Rams led 17-9 on a Tyre Desmore  jumper with 11:21 in the first half, but that was the Rams' last field goal until WyKevin Bazemore would come up with a steal and dunk one second before halftime. In between baskets, the SAC Falcons went on a 19-6 run, and were able to take back control of the game and the Falcons entered the locker room leading 28-25 at halftime as the Rams shot 25 percent in the first half.

But WSSU came out of the locker room on fire, and with its defensive intensity picked up, forced the Falcons into some early turnovers and briefly regained the lead at 34-33 on a Joseph Thompson steal and dunk.

WSSU would once again struggle to find the rim after its early success in the second half and the Falcons would once again seize control of the game, and would push its lead back out to a six point advantage.

The Rams were not done and itself went on a run of 8-0, and on Chris Witherspoon's 3-pointer, took a lead of 42-40 with 9:50 remaining.

Saint Augustine's would hold the Rams without a field goal during a four-minute stretch late in the half, and it enabled the Falcons to take home the win.

Justin Glover was the only Rams in double figures on the afternoon with 14 points.  Kimani Hunt came off the bench to add eight points and nine rebounds, while WyKevin Bazemore chipped in seven points and nine rebounds.

For Saint Augustine's, Chris Johnson led a balanced scoring effort with 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Tyron Laughinghouse added 10 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

The WSSU Rams jump right back into the fire, facing Johnson C. Smith University on Monday night at Brayboy Gymnasium on the JCSU campus.  Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 7:30 PM.
