Box Score RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (16-9, 11-4 CIAA, 5-4 CIAA South) could not find any answers when the team took an 83-57 loss at Shaw, Monday evening. The Lady Rams found themselves struggling at both ends of the court as the team shot just 25% from the floor while allowing the Lady Bears to shoot 44.1% in the game.
The numbers told the story of the game as the Lady Rams connected on 19-of-76 shots in the game while the Lady Bears hit 30-of-68 shots. WSSU senior guard Courtney Medley led the attack for the Lady Rams with 10 points in the game. She was the only WSSU player to reach double-digit scoring in the game. WSSU junior forward LaQuanda Williams added a career-high 12 rebounds in the game and finished with nine points.
The Lady Rams got off to a slow start in the game, falling into an early 18-6 deficit with 12:57 left in the first half. The Lady Rams managed just two field goals in the first 10 minutes of the game to key the tough start. The Lady Rams were able to get things going late in the half, finishing with 23 first half points, but the team could not answer the potent Lady Bears who left WSSU trailing 44-23 at halftime. For the half, the Lady Rams were held to shooting 21.6% from the field while allowing the Lady Bears to shoot 42.1%.
The Lady Rams came out with a great early effort in the second half, scoring seven points in the first three minutes to cut their deficit down to 17 points, 48-31 at the 17:05 mark. However, the Lady Bears would heat up once again with an 11-3 run that left the Lady Rams trailing, 59-35 with 13:31 left to play. Though saddled with a deficit, the Lady Rams continued to fight with a 10-5 run that left the team trailing 68-48 with 7:34 left to play.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 16-9 (11-3 CIAA, 5-4 CIAA South). The team loss, combined with the Johnson C. Smith win at Saint Augustine's effectively ends the Lady Rams' bid for a top two in the CIAA Southern Division. The Lady Rams will return home for their next action as the team will host the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos on Senior Night at the C.E.
