Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (17-9, 12-4 CIAA) closed out home court on a high note with an 80-55 win over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (), Saturday evening. With the win, the Lady Rams closed out home court for the 2011-12 season with their ninth home win of the season.
As a team, the Lady Rams gave a great overall effort, shooting 45.5% from the floor while forcing 22 Lady Bronco turnovers. In a fitting manner, it was the WSSU seniors who led the team to the win with some stellar efforts in the win. WSSU senior forward Jordhan Peterson led the way with her first career double-double 12 points and a career-high 17 rebounds in the game. Senior guard Courtney Medley also had a great game with nine points and a career-high eight assists.
The Lady Rams opened the game with a strong start, but soon had to answer a challenge from the Lady Broncos as the Lady Rams held on to a 13-12 lead on a Peterson jumper with just over 12 minutes left in the first half. From there, the Lady Rams never looked back as the team pushed its lead to as many as 16 points when junior forward Monique Williams hit a lay-up with just over three minutes left to put the Lady Rams on top, 35-19. From there, the Lady Rams would cruise to take a 40-26 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Rams found themselves holding off the Lady Broncos who made a determined effort, cutting the WSSU lead down to just eight points, 43-35 with just over 16 minutes left to play. However, the Lady Rams would not relent with a late surge that pushed team's lead to 16 points, 61-45 on a lay-up by junior forward LaQuanda Williams. Down the stretch of the game, the Lady Rams opened things up as a three-pointer at the buzzer by freshman forward Dionna Scott capped the Lady Rams' 80-55 victory.
With the win, the Lady Rams complete the 2011-12 regular season with a 17-9 overall record and a 12-4 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The team also posted a 6-4 record in the CIAA Southern Division to place third in the division. With the finish, the Lady Rams are likely to take the third seed in the division for the upcoming 2012 CIAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament, next week. The team will await the official announcement of the tournament bracket tomorrow.
