#23 WSSU Rams Survive Late Rally For A 70-66 Win Over Lincoln (Pa) On The Road

Box Score

Lincoln, Pa -- Justin Glover scored 16 points, and the WSSU Rams used a 10-2 run over the final 5:14 to come away with a 70-66 win Saturday over Lincoln University to open Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play.

With the win, Winston-Salem State improves to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA. Lincoln (Pa) University falls to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in CIAA play.

WSSU was back in action after 18 days off for the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Winston-Salem State started quickly behind freshman, Michel-Ofik Nzege, and held an early 11-2 advantage.

But the home standing Lions would not go away and quickly got back into the game led by the early hot shooting of Kenny Sharpe.

Neither team could pull away from the other, and the two teams went into the locker room tied at 36-36 at halftime.

The second half was much of the same, with both teams scrapping hard over the final 20 minutes, before WSSU would come up with some crucial plays down the stretch. Joseph Thompson had two straight "and 1's", and Marcus Wells hit a big three point shot and the shot clock was winding down, to keep WSSU out in front over the stretch run.

A Tyre Desmore jumper and a free throw by Justin Glover sealed the win for the Rams over the final minutes of the game.

The Rams shot 50% from the floor on the evening, despite hitting just 3 of 14 three point shots, and converted 15 of 21 free throw attempts.

The score was tied eight different times, and there was a total of 22 lead changes in the game. WSSU also held a 38-26 advantage in points in the paint, and a two rebounds advantage of 34-32.

For WSSU, Glover 16 points led the Rams, followed by 13 points from Joseph Thompson, off the bench. Thompson finished the night going 5 for 5 from the floor and 3 of 4 from the charity stripe.  Marcus Wells has nine points, six assists, three steals and four rebounds, while Michel-Ofik Nzege finished with eight points.  Kimani Hunt added seven points and Tyre Desmore chipped in five points and five rebounds. WyKevin Bazemore finished with three points and a game high 12 rebounds.

For Lincoln, Kenny Sharpe finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while Derrick Washington added 13 points. Justin Jackson chipped in 12 points and George Jackson added 10 points and five rebounds. Will Cole also contributed eight points and Richard Glover added six points and five rebounds.

Winston-Salem State will continue on the road on Monday night, when they face off with the Bowie State Bulldogs at 7:30 pm.
