Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (12-12, 11-3 CIAA) sent their seniors out with a bang when the team took a dominating three-Set win over the Shaw Lady Bears (1-17, 0-14 CIAA), Monday evening. Fittingly, it was senior middle blocker Darissa Jones who led the Lady Rams to the senior night win with an impressive overall effort in the 25-18, 25-6, and 25-11 win.
As a team, the Lady Rams had a stellar outing with 30 kills and just five attack errors. The team also also recorded eight service aces in the match as well. Jones led the way for the Lady Rams with seven kills, no attack errors, and five total blocks (one solo). Freshman outside hitter Jasmine Smith came off the bench for a great effort as well with seven kills and three service aces.
The Lady Rams had a slow start against the scrappy Shaw team, but kicked things into gear late in the opening set. The Lady Rams kicked things into gear early with a 9-5 lead, but the Lady Bears showed their heart when they clawed their way to a 14-11 lead. The Lady Rams responded in a big way, however, when they broke out for a 14-4 run to close the set. The run included 11 straight points by the Lady Rams.
The second set was a dominating effort by the Lady Rams as the Lady Rams allowed just six points to the Lady Bears. After taking a commanding 9-4 lead, the Lady Rams allowed just two more points to the Lady Bears, including a 10-0 run that featured three straight kills from Jones.
As expected, the Lady Bears came back with a better effort in the final set, but the Lady Rams would not relent as the team closed out the match with the win. After taking control of the set with an 8-3 start, the Lady Rams didn't look back. The team pushed its lead to nine points 19-10 before allowing just one more point to the Lady Bears.
With the win, the Lady Rams returned to their winning ways after five losses. The Lady Rams will return to action Wednesday when they head to Banner Elk, N.C. to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats.
