Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (13-13, 12-3 CIAA) got back to their winning ways when the team took an impressive three-set win over the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls (11-12, 8-7 CIAA), Monday evening. The Lady Rams picked up a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division road win when they took the 26-24, 25-17, and 25-19 victory.
The Lady Rams were impressive both offensively and defensively in the match with 35 kills and five service aces. Junior right side hitter Olivia Owens led the way for the Lady Rams with 11 kills and two total blocks (none solo) in the match. Senior setter Kayla Brass coordinated the effort with 13 assists, three service aces and a team-high seven digs while sophomore Zipporah Foster added 15 assists.
The opening set was the toughest for the Lady Rams as the team rallied from a 13-17 deficit to claim the win. After tying the match, 22-22, the Lady Rams took the lead for good after a JCSU attack error. From there, the Lady Rams held off the Lady Golden Bulls for the victory. There was not as much drama in the second set as the Lady Rams jumped out to an 8-3 start. After pushing their lead to as many as eight points, 18-10, the Lady Rams cruised to the 25-17 victory. The Lady Rams kept things going in the third set when jumped out to 4-1 lead. The team soon found themselves challenged when Johnson C. Smith tied the set, 10-10, but the Lady Rams answered later in the set with a 5-0 run to close out the match with a 25-19 win.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 13-13 on the season and 12-3 in CIAA play. The Lady Rams will return to action, Thursday evening when the team heads to Salisbury, N.C. to take on the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears in another key CIAA Southern Division match.
