Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-7, 4-2 CIAA) came up just short in a tough loss to the Virginia State Lady Trojans (4-5, 2-4 CIAA) in the opening match of the 2014 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Round Up hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. The match was a hotly contested affair on both sides with each set going into extra points. After dominating the opening set of the match with a 25-15 win, the Lady Rams fell short in a see-saw battle 25-27, 24-26, 28-26, and 16-18.
The Lady Rams gave a great overall effort in the match as the team finished with 58 kills and only 24 attack errors. The team also added 13 service aces. Defensively, the Lady Rams totaled 17 blocks (three solo) in the match. WSSU freshman Sydney Holland led the attack with a double-double 17 total kills and 19 digs while junior right side Olivia Owens added 16 kills. Fellow freshman Jasmine Smith continued her strong play as well with 15 kills.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 4-7 on the season and 4-2 in CIAA play. The team would return to action later in the day when they took on the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings.
