Tyree Massey's Career Day Sparks Rams To 36-19 Win Over St. Augustine's Falcons

RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State University pounded out 444 yards of total offense and Tyree Massey ran for a career high 164 yards, as the Rams rolled to a 36-19 win over St. Augustine's University on Saturday at the George Williams Sports complex on the St. Augustine's campus.

With the victory, WSSU improves to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA, while the Falcons fall to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the CIAA.

St. Augustine's would get on the scoreboard first, after holding the Rams on fourth and one and getting an interception, the Falcons moved 50 yards in seven plays and would reach the endzone on a 19 yard pass from Jovahn Williams to Jordan Turkvant. The PAT would be muffed and the Falcons would take an early 6-0 advantage.

Winston-Salem State would answer back with a 13 play, 55 yard drive that would be capped off by a Will Johnson 32 yards field goal.

The Rams would put some separation between the two teams in the second quarter, as they would score three touchdowns during the period.

WSSU would score first with 12:31 to play before the half, Reggie Wilkins would take a punt back 90 yards for a touchdown. They would follow that up with a 28 yard touchdown pass to Rashan Williams from Rod Tinsley Jr, that capped an impressive six play, 75 yard drive, to give WSSU a 16-6 lead.  And finally, with 1:19 left before halftime, Tyree Massey would score his first touchdown of the day from four yards out to give the Rams a 22-6 lead heading into the locker room at the h half.

The St. Augustine's Falcons would cut into the Rams lead with 9:00 left in the third quarter when from Jovahn Williams hooked up with Jordan Turkvant again for a 13 yard passing touchdown that would come off of a WSSU intercepted pass.

On the Rams next possession, they would answer back with a long 66 yard, seven play drive that WSSu would finish off with a Xavier Quick one yard run.

Winston-Salem State would put the game out of reach late in the quarter when Tyree Massey scored his second touchdown of the day on a four yard run, to give WSSU a 36-13 lead.

The Falcons would add another late passing touchdown, to cut the lead to 36-19.

The Rams would recover the onside kick attempt and knee that ball down to take the CIAA Division game, 36-19.

Tyree Massey had a monster day, rushing for a career-high 164 yards on 20 carries with two scores, while Kerrion Moore rushed 13 times for 79 yards. Xavier Quick added 30 yards and one touchdown, and Will Walton rushed one time for 12 yards.

Rod Tinsley Jr went seven of 17 with an interception, and one touchdown and 180 yards. He had a long pass of 46 yards on the day.

Rashan Williams had three catches on the day for 776 yards and one score, and Eric Williams (46 yds), Marcel Caver (23 yds), Demeeko Jones Jr (22 yds) and William Belcher (13 yds) each had one catch.

Will Johnson punt one time for 43 yards, and went one of two on field goals on the afternoon.

Defensively, the Rams were led by Xavier Gregory, who finished with seven tackles, while Brandon Dixon and Jaitavius Jackson each had six tackles. Dixon also picked up 0.5 tackle for a loss. Jayron Rankin, Phillip Williamson and Aaron Johnson had five tackles each, with Rankin and Johnson picking up 0.5 tackles for loss. James Bullock and Kyrell Washington had four tackles apiece, with Washington picking up 0.5 tackle for a loss. Daveon Perry had the Rams only interception on the day, and returned with 63 yards.

Winston-Salem State University will travel to Salisbury, NC next week to take on the Blue Bears of Livingstone College. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm.
