Rams Break Out for 69-49 Win Over Concord

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams (3-4) had an offensive explosion, Monday evening when the team broke out for a 69-49 win over the Concord Mountain Lions (3-6). The Rams took the win behind a great offensive effort as they scored a season-high 69 points in the win while holding the Mountain Lions to just 49 points in the game.

As a team, the Rams had one of their best efforts of the season at both ends of the court. Offensively, the team scored a season-high 69 points. Defensively, the Rams' 49 points allowed were just three points more than the team's season best 46 points allowed. WSSU sophomore guard Tiana Edwards led the way for the Rams with a game-high 14 points off the bench while junior forward Jatzmin Johnson made her career debut with the Rams with 12 points in the game. Sophomore center Kandace Tate continued a great season with eight points and eight rebounds in the game.

The Rams took the win after overcoming a hot start by the Mountain Lions. Once in control, WSSU never looked back as they cruised to the victory. The Rams got off to a slow start to the game as they allowed an 11-2 run by the Mountain Lions to fall behind early in the game. It was a three-pointer from senior guard Jazmyn Saunders at the 5:38 mark in the first quarter that sparked a 19-point run that left the Rams on top, 21-11 with 8:02 left in the second quarter. The Rams held the Mountain Lions scoreless for over seven minutes during the run. Once in control, the Rams didn't look back as they pushed their lead to as many as 15 points when an Edwards lay-up in the final seconds of the half, capped a 12-4 WSSU run that saw the Rams allow just one made field goal in the final seven minutes of the half and left the Rams on top, 31-18.

The Rams' dominant performances continued in the second half as the team remained in control of the game. After opening the half with three unanswered points, the Rams pushed their lead to as many as 18 points after a lay-up from Johnson with 8:34 left in the third quarter. Things heated up in the third quarter when an Edwards three-point play at the 7:39 mark left the Rams on top, 39-20. The Mountain Lions would strike back as they chipped away at the WSSU lead and cut the WSSU lead down to single digits, 44-35 with 1:38 left in the third quarter. But the Rams would not let the Mountain Lions to get any closer as they pulled away with a strong fourth-quarter effort. The Rams opened the fourth quarter with six straight points to jump ahead, 54-37 with 8:24 left to play. Once in control of the game, 63-45, with 5:54 left to play, the Rams turned their efforts to the defensive end as they allowed just four points to the Mountain Lions, including just one made field goal in the final five minutes of play to seal the 69-49 victory.

With the win, the Rams pick up their first home win of the season. The team will return to action, Thursday evening when the team hosts the Barton Bulldogs in a 5:30 p.m. game.
