Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem State had four players score in double figures, and pulled away in the second half to defeat the St. Augustine's Falcons, 75-56, Saturday evening at the CE Gaines Center.
The loss snapped a seven game losing streak, and moved the Rams to 7-10 overall, 1-5 in the CIAA and 1-0 in the important Southern Division. St. Augustine's falls to 5-12 overall, 0-7 in the CIAA and 0-1 in the Southern Division.
The WSSU Rams started the game strong and jumped out to an early four point lead, before the St. Augustine's Falcons stormed back with 12-0 run to take the lead, and push it out to eight points with 4 minutes left in the first half.
But the Rams would fight back, and using a 13-4 run to end the half, surged ahead at 29-28 heading into the locker room at the half.
Winston-Salem State started the second with a fury, outscoring St. Augustine's 19-2 to begin the half, holding the Falcons scoreless in 13 consecutive trips down the floor.
Leading 48-30, the Rams kept their foot on the gas and never allowed St. Augustine's any breathing room, as their defensive intensity was on high for half, and WSSU would coast the rest of the way for a 19 point win, 75-56.
WSSU was led in scoring by Rayvon Harris and Terrell Leach, who each dropped in 15 points, while Harris also pulled down six rebounds, had two steals and two assists. Leach added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot. Keith Armstrong had another solid game inside for the Rams, finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds and an assist. Freshman William Crandell got his first career start and finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and a steal. Carlos Rankins chipped in eight points, and Jamel McAllister added six points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot.
St. Augustine's University was led in scoring by Quincy January who finished with a game high 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Keith Crawford added 11 points and four rebounds, and Anthony Gaskins chipped in 10 points.
Winston-Salem State will travel to Raleigh, NC on Wednesday, as the Rams take on the Shaw Bears at 8:00 pm.
