Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (12-6, 8-2 CIAA) returned to their winning ways, Monday evening when the team put on a dominating performance in a three-set win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (3-11, 2-7 CIAA). There was no fall break for the Rams as the team put on a stellar offensive performance to take the win.
The Rams took the win behind a stellar offensive performance. The Rams totaled 40 kills in the match with just six attack errors in the match. WSSU sophomore outside hitter Mia Herrod led the way for the Rams with 13 kills while senior outside hitter Teynia Shepherd added 10 kills and two service aces in the match. Defensively, freshman Mikayla Lytton led the way for the Rams with nine digs in the match.
The Rams took control of the match from the very beginning. The team's most impressive of the match came in the opening set when the team opened the set with an 18-3 run that included scoring five straight points to give the team its 18-3 lead. From there, the Rams had to fend off a late 4-1 rally by the Golden Bulls to close the set with a 25-10 win. The second set was more competitive with the Rams playing to a 13-9 lead before a five-point run left the Rams on top, 18-9. From there, the Rams cruised to the win with a 7-5 run to close out the set with a 25-14 win. The final set saw the Rams take control early once again with the team jumping to an 11-4 lead. Later in the set, the Rams mounted a 6-1 run to take their biggest lead, 21-8. JCSU would record a pair of scores before the Rams closed the set with a three-point run to seal the 25-10 set lead.
With the win, the Rams improve to 12-6 overall and 8-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play, and 2-2 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Rams will return to action, Thursday when the team hosts the Livingstone Blue Bears in a 7:00 p.m. match.
