Rams Break Out for 11-1 Win Over Glenville State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (6-6) broke out their offense to take an 11-1 win over the Glenville State Pioneers (3-6), Sunday afternoon. In addition to some powerful hitting, the Rams also had a great defensive effort in the game with the team holding the Pioneers to just two hits in the game. 

The Rams took the win behind a powerful hitting effort along with a tremendous pitching effort. WSSU junior centerfielder Randy Norris led the way for the Rams with two-for-four batting effort with a run scored and an RBI. Junior first base Brandon Nania a two-for-three batting effort with an RBI as well. Freshman shortstop Wellington Guzman and junior left fielder Rashad Stewart both hit home runs on the day. Guzman drove in three runs on his while Stewart it a solo homer.

The Rams struck early and often to pull away from the Pioneers. The team got thing started with a pair of second inning runs with freshman Jaxon Snider hitting an RBI double to score senior right fielder Brandon Ford. The effort was followed by Nania hitting an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in Snider. Sophomore Keegan Mahaffey scored after a Norris stolen base led to a throwing error by the Pioneers. After taking a 3-0 led into the third inning, the Rams allowed a fourth inning run to the Pioneers before scoring eight unanswered runs to claim the win. Highlights from the run included a fourth inning solo home run from Stewart and Guzman's sixth-inning three run home run.

WSSU senior Landon Biggs (1-1) took the pitching win with the start and going 2.1 innings with one run allowed (one earned) and four strikeouts. Biggs was one of nine WSSU pitchers to take the mound in the game.

With the win, the Rams improve to 6-6 for the season. The Rams will return to action, Tuesday evening when the team hosts the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals in a 6:00 p.m. game.
