Rams Rally Late for 5-2 Win Over University of Sciences

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-6) used a late rally to secure a 5-2 win over the University of the Sciences Devils (3-6), Sunday afternoon. The win was the fourth in a row for the Rams and saw the team score four late runs to pull away with the victory.

The Rams took the win behind a hard-hitting effort to accompany a solid defensive effort. As a team, the Rams totaled seven hits in the game, including a pair of extra base hits. Senior right fielder Brandon Ford led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three batting effort with a double and two RBI. Junior second base Rashad Stewart added a two-run home run in the game as well.

Things were close early in the game with the two teams tied for much of the contest. After a Ford RBI single in the second inning to score John Garcia in the first inning, the Devils tied the game in the second inning. It was in the fifth inning when the Rams broke things open with Stewart hitting a two-run home run. The effort was followed by an RBI double from Ford that scored junior center fielder Randy Norris and gave the Rams a 4-1 lead. The Devils answered with a solo home run in the sixth inning before freshman Wellington Guzman hit an RBI single to score Randal Ortiz and capped the Rams' 5-2 win.

WSSU senior Seth Reeves (1-1) took the pitching win. He started the game and went six innings for the Rams. He finished the game with two runs allowed (two earned) on five hits with a strikeout. Freshman Tyrese Hearst took the mound for an inning and finished with no runs on no hits allowed.

With the win, the Rams improve to 9-6. The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader later in the day. For more information on Rams baseball, call the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
