Abreu, Ford Record Five RBI Each in 13-6 Win at Concord

ATHENS, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (22-14) clicked on all cylinders when the team took a 13-6 road win over the Concord Mountain Lions (15-14), Wednesday. The Rams took the win behind an offensive explosion at the plate.

As a team, the Rams had one of their best offensive efforts of the season. The team totaled 18 hits in the game. WSSU junior centerfielder Randy Norris led the way for the Rams with a four-for-seven batting effort with three runs scored. Senior designated hitter Brandon Ford had a big day as well, going four-for-four with five RBI in the game. Senior first Emilio Abreu added five RBI as well when he went four-for-six at the plate with a double.

The Rams scored early an often to claim the win. The team scored in six of the nine innings played. Ford got things started with a first inning two-RBI single to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. After allowing a first inning run to the Mountain Lions, the Rams really broke out with four second-inning runs. Ford hit his second two-RBI single to get things started. It was followed by Abreu hitting a two RBI single of his own and gave the Rams a 6-1 lead. The Rams padded their lead in the third inning when Abreu hit a third-inning RBI single as well that left the Rams on top, 7-1. Junior Rashad Stewart stole home in the fourth inning to give the Rams an 8-1 lead before a four-run sixth inning that included an RBI double from senior Matthew Mauldin and an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman Luke Spiva that left the Rams on top 12-1 in the sixth inning. The Rams allowed a sixth inning run and a pair of seventh-inning runs before an RBI double from Abreu in the eighth inning. Concord rallied late, but the Rams; defense held the Mountain Lions at bay and claimed the 13-6 victory.

WSSU senior pitcher Seth Reeves (3-2) took the pitching win. He started the game and went five innings. He finished the game with one run allowed (one earned) on four hits. He also recorded six strikeouts on the way. Three more Rams pitchers took the mound in the game as well.
