Big Second Inning Lifts Rams to 14-5 Win Over Saint Augustine's

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC –The Winston-Salem State Rams (30-17) closed out Senior Day in a big way when the team took a 14-8 win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons (11-28). The Rams benefitted from nine walks at the plate and turned them into 14 runs to close out the home portion of their schedule.

As a team, the Rams needed just six hits to take the big win. WSSU sophomore Cole Parks led the way for the Rams with a two-for-two performance with a triple, two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman Luke Spiva went one-for-three with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

The Rams did much of their damage early to pull out the win. The team broke the game open in the second inning when the team loaded the bases twice and scored eight runs. Freshman Trenton Smiley hit a two-RBI single to score Spiva and Parks which was followed by a two-RBI single from junior centerfielder Randy Norris. Senior third base Emilio Abreu drew an RBI hit-by-pitch which was followed by a three RBI triple from Parks. The effort left the Rams with an 8-0 lead after the big second inning. The Rams added two more runs in the third inning when senior John Garcia hit into an RBI fielder's choice to score Smiley. Junior second base Nick Williams scored on an SAU passed ball. After allowing a fourth inning run to the Falcons, the Rams held a 10-2 lead. The team added four more fourth inning runs. Spiva hit a two-RBI double before scoring on a wild pitch. Smiley also scored on a wild pitch to leave the Rams with a 14-2 lead. The Rams allowed a sixth inning run as well as a pair of seventh inning runs.

WSSU senior Landon Biggs got the pitching win. He started the game and went three innings. He finished the game with one run allowed (none earned) with three strikeouts. Four more Rams came in for an inning each.

With the win, the Rams improve to 30-17. The team will return to action next weekend when the team hits the road to take on Georgia College in a three-game series.
