Rams Pull Away Late for a 13-10 Win at Concord

ATHENS, WVA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (27-12) got three big late runs to claim a 13-10 road win over the Concord Mountain Lions (23-10), Tuesday. After playing to a 10-10 tie late in the game, the Rams scored three eighth inning runs to claim big win.

The Rams had a big day at the plate to claim the road win. As a team, the Rams totaled 15 hits against the Mountain Lions. WSSU sophomore Cole Parks led the way with a three-for-four batting performance with seven RBI and three runs scored. He also added a pair of home runs in the game as well. Sophomore E.P. Reese added a two-for-four effort with three runs scored and an RBI.

The game was a high-scoring affair early with both teams getting runs across the plate. The Rams got things started in a big way when Parks hit a first inning grand slam home run in the first inning to give WSSU a 4-0 lead. After allowing a first inning run to the Mountain Lions, the Rams padded their lead when freshman Tyler Daniels added a second inning RBI single to put WSSU ahead 5-1. Things got interesting as the Rams allowed four second inning runs to leave the game tied, 5-5. The Rams went ahead in the fifth inning when Reese hit an RBI single that was followed by a Parks two-run homer to give the Rams an 8-7 lead. Sophomore Saunders Joplin added a solo home run to leave the Rams on top, 9-7. Parks added an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Rams a 10-7 lead in the sixth inning. Things got interesting as the Rams allowed a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game, 10-10. It was in the eighth inning when redshirt-senior Hunter Phillips hit a two-RBI double that was followed by an RBI single from sophomore Luke Spiva. The effort gave the Rams a 13-10 lead that the team held on for the win.

Six WSSU pitchers took the mound during the game with sophomore Jalen Scott (5-1) getting credited for the win. He went the final three innings and finished the game with no runs allowed on two hits with a strikeout. Senior Kyle Taylor also went two inning with no runs allowed on one hit.

With the win, the Rams improve to 27-12. The team will return to the road for their next action as they will head to Emmanuel, Ga. to take on the Emmanuel College Lions in a three-game weekend series.
