Women Hoops Roll past Fayetteville State Sunday Afternoon

Box Score

The jinx is officially over!  The WSSU women's basketball team, with only seven available players, defeated Fayetteville State 62-57 at Capel Arena in Fayetteville.  It was the first Rams win since February 11, 2017, in Winston-Salem.

Playing in an empty arena because of FSU's no fans Covid protocol, WSSU overcame a nine-point deficit with 5:57 to play in the final quarter to claim the win.  Brooke Spaulding led 'SU, scoring 21 points.  O'Shae Hatley came off the bench to add 16.

While both teams had 17 turnovers, WSSU feasted on the Bronco's miscues with 23 points.  FSU could only convert for seven points from Rams mistakes.

FSU turned a 43-42 'SU lead with 8:42 remaining in the game into a 52-43 advantage with 5:57 to play.

Spaulding began the comeback with a layup and free throw for an old-fashioned three-point play with 5:10 on the clock. Hatley's steal and fastbreak layup cut the Rams deficit to four with 3:42 to play. The Broncos responded with a basket to go back up by six points with 3:20 remaining.

Kendra Ross' steal and a three-point play on a layup and free throw brought the Rams to within three with 2:32 to play. Melody Pritchard's steal and Spaulding's three-pointer, one of only two in the game for 'SU, tied the game at 54 with 1:16 to play.

The Broncos hit one of two free throws to regain a one-point lead with 1:02 on the clock.

Pritchard's two free throws put the Rams ahead by a single point with 41 seconds to play.  Spaulding added two points from the charity stripe to give 'SU a three-point lead with 26 seconds remaining.

FSU scored its final basket with 19 seconds to play.  Pritchard's layup and Spaulding's two free throws sealed the win for the Rams.

WSSU shot 38.7% for the game and hit 12-17 free throws for 70.6%.  The Rams improved to 8-6 overall,  4-3 in CIAA play, and 2-1 in the Southern Division standings.  WSSU travels to Johnson C. Smith on Wednesday.
