Rams Football travels to Raleigh to take on St. Augustine’s Saturday Afternoon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University football team hits the road once more this season traveling to Raleigh to take on St. Augustine's Saturday, October 22nd inside George Williams Athletic Complex.

This will be the 35th meeting between the Rams and the Falcons dating back to 1946. WSSU leads the series 20-12-2. The Rams have won the last three games and the Falcons won last in 2017, 17-14 in Raleigh.

Last Time out St. Augustine's
Winston-Salem State played its most complete game in two years in a 41-0 thrashing of St. Augustine's on William "Bill" Hayes Field at Bowman Gray Stadium. The Rams evened their CIAA record at 2-2 and improved to 2-0 in the Southern Division, while the Falcons remained winless this season.
 
Last Time Out
It was a beautiful day at Bowman Gray Stadium as the Winston-Salem State University football team picked up its first win over Shaw University with around 3,000 fans last Saturday, October 15th.
 
The Rams moved to (1-5, 1-3 CIAA), while the Bears are now (2-5, 2-3 CIAA) in the season.
The Rams' special team had a huge play when Narique Smith blocked a punt and senior Willy Blackstock recovered the ball and returned it 68-yards for a touchdown. With the extra point, the Rams went up 17-10 with 10:19 left in the third quarter.
 
CIAA Weekly Awards
Sophomore defensive back, Justin Fleming was named the CIAA Defensive Back of the Week for week one after he returned one interception for a 25-yard touchdown and Winston-Salem State's first points of the game. His other interception came in the RedZone, stalling a Marauders' drive.
 
The defensive back also recorded five solo tackles, including one for a loss. His tackle for a loss came on a 3rd-and-1 that forced a Central State punt.
 
CIAA Pre-Season/Poll
Elijah Banks was named to the All-CIAA Preseason Team. Banks, a defensive back from Winston-Salem, North Carolina played in every game for the Rams during the 2021 season recording 34 total tackles (22 solo). He also had three interceptions for 47 yards, five pass deflections, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. He was a second-team All-CIAA selection.
 
Overall, the Rams were picked to finish third in the southern division and eighth in the conference.
 
Up Next
After facing St. Augustine's on Saturday, the Rams will host Johnson C. Smith University on October 29th for the Hall of Fame/ Community Day/ Pink Game. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
