Rams Football Back at Bowman Gray to Host Johnson C. Smith Saturday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -The Winston-Salem State University football team will host Johnson C. Smith University Saturday, October 29th at Bowman Gray Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

Marketing
This week's marketing themes are the Hall of Fame game, Community Day, and our Pink Game. We will have honorary captions to do the flip coin toss as well as different presentations during halftime.
Hall of Famers is asked to wear their red blazers with black sacks and to meet at the field house at 11 a.m. Hall of Famers in attendance will also be recognized at halftime.

Last Time Out vs. Johnson C. Smith
The Rams defeated Johnson C. Smith on 26-12 on October 9, 2021. The Winston-Salem State offense exploded for a season-high 26 points, defeating Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte.  It was the Rams first win of the season and 20th consecutive victory over the winless Golden Bulls.
 
Junior quarterback Cameron Lewis teamed with freshman wide receiver Antjuan Collins for a relentless passing attack.  Collins caught seven passes for 126 yards and one touchdown.
 
Last Time Out
The Winston-Salem State University football team scored the most points thus far this season defeating St. Augustine's 41-14 Saturday afternoon inside the George Williams Athletic Complex.
The Rams improve to (2-5, 2-4 CIAA), while SAU moves to (1-7, 1-5 CIAA).
JahTwan Stafford had a 15-yard run to score and the extra point was good to give the Rams a 7-0 score with 9:52 left in the first quarter. JahTwan Stafford had another 14-yard run to score but the two-point conversion was no good. The Rams led 13-0 with 10:54 left in the first half.

CIAA Weekly Awards
Quick, a sophomore from Greensboro, North Carolina was named Offensive Lineman of the Week after he and the WSSU offensive line powered the Rams to a season-high 456 total yards of offense (228 passing and 228 rushing) and 8.3 yards per play in 41-14 win over St. Augustine's. Winston-Salem State rushed for three touchdowns and passed for three touchdowns while going a perfect four-for-four in the red zone. The junior anchored an offensive line that did not surrender a single sack on 14 pass attempts.

Mobley, a junior from Columbia, South Carolina was named Receiver of the Week after he caught four passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns — all season-highs for the junior in the Rams' 41-14 win over St. Augustine's. Mobley scored touchdowns of 9 yards and 72 yards in the second half as Winston-Salem State improved upon its halftime lead of 13-7. His second touchdown, the 72-yarder, gave the Rams a 34-14 lead. Mobley also had a 35-yard reception in the third quarter.
Stafford, a freshman from Monroe, North Carolina, was named Rookie of the Week after he rushed for a game-high 185 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries (8.8 yards per carry) in the Rams' 41-14 win over the Falcons. His 185 yards rushing is tied for the most by a Ram since August 2017. He helped Winston-Salem State jump out to a 13-0 lead with touchdown runs of 14 and 15 yards. The freshman rushed for 10 first downs total and had six rushes of 15 yards or more, including his longest run of 26 yards.

Sophomore defensive back, Justin Fleming was named the CIAA Defensive Back of the Week for week one after he returned one interception for a 25-yard touchdown and Winston-Salem State's first points of the game. His other interception came in the RedZone, stalling a Marauders' drive. The defensive back also recorded five solo tackles, including one for a loss. His tackle for a loss came on a 3rd-and-1 that forced a Central State punt.

CIAA Pre-Season/Poll
Elijah Banks was named to the All-CIAA Preseason Team. Banks, a defensive back from Winston-Salem, North Carolina played in every game for the Rams during the 2021 season recording 34 total tackles (22 solo). He also had three interceptions for 47 yards, five pass deflections, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. He was a second-team All-CIAA selection.


Overall, the Rams were picked to finish third in the southern division and eighth in the conference.
