WSSU Begins Divisional Play Hosting Livingstone Saturday Afternoon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Winston-Salem State University football team will play Livingstone College as they start divisional play on Saturday, October 7th at Bowman Gray Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

This will be the 58th meeting between the Rams and the Blue Bears dating back to 1942. The Rams fell to Livingstone 20-17 on October 8th, 2022.

LC Last Time Out vs. Bowie State University
The Blue Bears defeated the Bulldogs 31-18 giving LC their first victory of the season. The Blue Bears got on the board first on a 2-yard touchdown pass by Marcus Drish, with the extra point giving LC a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Opening up the second quarter Bowie State got on the board making the score 7-6. But it did not take long for the Blue Bears to extend the lead before halftime. First a Marcus Drish 5-yard touchdown pass, then a field goal. By halftime, the score was 17-6.
 
The third quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams. Going into the fourth quarter the Bulldogs used a 10-play drive leading to a touchdown cutting the lead to 17-12. The Blue Bears put the game away as they would score on back-to-back drives. In that span, Marcus Drish threw two more touchdowns giving him three for the day, as the lead grew to 31-12. The Bulldogs still had some fight in them as they would score another touchdown with 3:00 left on the clock, making the score 31-18 but it was too late.
 
Last Time Out vs. Lincoln (PA) University
The Rams fell short to the Lions 30-27. The Lions got on the board first 7-0 on an Isiah Freeman touchdown pass. The Rams came back with twenty-one unanswered points by mid-second quarter. First Daylin Lee connected with RJ Mobley on a 2-yard passing touchdown. At the end of the first quarter, Asa Barnes rushed for a 1-yard touchdown. Early in the second quarter JahTwan Strafford returned the Lions punt 95 yards for another touchdown, which made the score 21-7 lead for the Rams. The Lions would score the next nine points on another touchdown pass from Isiah Freeman going into halftime the score was 21-14.
 
With the only score coming from a Lincoln safety the score was 21-16 going into the fourth quarter. In the beginning of the fourth quarter, Isiah Freeman rushed for a 1-yard rushing touchdown and with the missed 2-point conversion gave the Lions their first lead of the day 22-21. The Rams used a 7-play 80-yard drive ending in a 19-yard touchdown pass by Daylin Lee to RJ Mobley giving the lead back to the Rams 27-22 with 1:05 left on the clock. But that was just enough time for Lincoln to go down the field and score a game-winning touchdown making the score 30-22.
 
CIAA Weekly Awards
Camar Kyle was named Defensive Lineman of the Week, while teammates Justin Fleming was named Defensive Back, and Daylin Lee earned Rookie of the Week accolades for week three.
 
Redshirt Junior Defensive Back Dante Bowlding was named CIAA Defensive Back of the Week for week four after he returned a pick-six 52 yards for a touchdown extending the lead to 27-0. Bowlding finished the game with four tackles (2 solo), and one forced fumble.
 
CIAA Pre-Season/Poll
The Rams were picked fourth in the Southern Division and seventh overall.
 
Up Next
The Rams will travel to Durham, North Carolina on Saturday, October 14th to take on Shaw University. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and will be broadcasted on HBCUGo.
