Men’s Basketball Host Johnson C. Smith Thursday, Livingstone Saturday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team welcomes two divisional rivals this week. First, the Rams will take on Johnson C. Smith University on Thursday, February 1st. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center. Then the Rams will face off against Livingstone College on Saturday, February 3rd. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.

Series Information vs. Johnson C. Smith University 
Since 2006, the Rams have led the series 16-12 against the Golden Bulls. Last time out, the Golden Bulls defeated the Rams 79-70 on January 13th, 2024. 
 
Series Information vs. Livingstone College 
Since 2006, the Rams have led the series 15-14. The Rams have won 7-out-of-8 matchups against the Blue Bears. Last season the Rams won both matchups. In the first match-up, the Rams won 61-44 on January 28th, 2023. They won the second match-up 62-42 on February 18th.  
 
Last Time Out
The Rams fell to Fayetteville State University 61-58 on Saturday, January 27th. Jaylen Alston led the Rams with 24 points and scored his 1,000 career points in the first half of the game.  Isaac Parson also scored 14 points with five rebounds.
 
Rams Returners:
The Rams brought back seven returners from last year's team, sophomores Jeremy Dixon, Ketron "KC Shaw, juniors Ralph Bland, Stefon McLead, Isaac Parson, senior Jaylen Alston, and graduate student Jaylin Parker.
 
Ram Newcomers:
The Rams welcomed newcomers Lance Gill, Myles Pettis, Antonio Perkins, Camyl Witherspoon, Devon Bristow, Daylin Brandon, Tristan Davis, Tyrhe Fortney, Jahnarious Snell, Clint Wickliffe, and Imajae Dodd.
 
CIAA Preseason:
Isaac Parson was named to the All-CIAA preseason team Backcourt and Jaylen Alston was named to the All-CIAA Frontcourt team. Overall, the Rams were selected to finish fourth in the season poll and third in the Southern Division.
 
Weekly Awards
  • Jaylen Alston was named CIAA Offensive Player of the Week for weeks two, three, and 12.
  • Imajae Dodd was named CIAA Defensive Player of the Week  for weeks two, six. and seven. 
  • Isaac Parson was named HBCU National Player of the Week & CIAA Player of the Week for week seven.

The men were not ranked in the polls this week but did receive votes. 
 
Scouting Report
Winston-Salem State University (13-6, 7-3 CIAA)
The Rams are led in scoring by Jaylen Alston with 17.1 points per game and Isaac Parson 13.7 points per game. The Rams are averaging 71.7 points a game. 
 
Johnson C. Smith (11-8, 6-6 CIAA)
The Golden Bulls fell to Claflin University 74-72 on Saturday, January 27th. Avery Huggins led the Golden Bulls with 27 points, followed by Ashton Sherell recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Avery Huggins is the Golden Bulls leading scorer averaging 17.1 points a game, followed by Ezekiel Cannedy averaging 12.2 points per game.
 
The Golden Bulls are scoring 80.6 points a game.
JCSU defeated Shaw last night January 30, 76-73 inside Brayboy Gym.
 
Livingstone College (9-10, 5-5 CIAA) 
The Blue Bears defeated Fayetteville State University 59-54 on Thursday, January 25th. Nathan Montaque led the Blue Bears with 13 points and eight rebounds, followed by Khyree Temple with 12 points. Khyree Temple is the Blue Bears leading scorer averaging 11.6 points a game. 
 
The Blue Bears are averaging 60.5 points per game.
 
Up Next 
The Rams will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday, February 7th, taking on St. Augustine's University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.  inside Emery Gymnasium.
