Football Looks to Bounce Back Against Shaw Saturday Afternoon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Winston-Salem State University football team looks to bounce back against Shaw University on Saturday, October 12th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the William "Bill" Hayes field inside Bowman Gray Stadium.

Student-Athlete Mental Health Week
Each year, Hilinski's Hope Foundation curates a collective week of action focused on eliminating stigma and increasing mental health resources for universities and colleges nationwide. The goal of the week is to raise mental health awareness, destigmatize mental illness, and provide quality resources to student-athletes nationwide. During Saturday's games players will have helmet stickers, staff will have lapel pins. A PSA will be played during the game. 
At the start of the 3rd quarter teams will hold up three fingers honoring Tyler Hilinski.

Last Time Out vs. Virginia Union 
The Rams fell to the Panthers 31-13, on Saturday, October 5, 2024. Trevon Hester rushed for 97 yards on 22 attempts. Nehemiah Williams had five catches for 101 yards. Defensively, Jaylyn Norris had five tackles three of them were tackles for loss. 

Last Time Out Shaw University  vs Bluefield State University 
The Panthers defeated Bluefield State 35-17, on Saturday, October 5, 2024. Christian Peters passed for 8-for-18 with passing touchdowns. Travon Tensley on 11 carries rushed for 125 yards with a rushing touchdown. Traquan Johnson on 11 carries for 102 yards and one touchdown. Jahman McNeil had seven tackles for the Bears.  

Last Time Out WSSU vs. Shaw University 
The Rams defeated Shaw University 41-20 on October 14th, 2023. Daylin Lee went 15-for-30 for 195 yards and three touchdown passes. Gabriel Linen on 17 carries rushed for 164 yards with a rushing touchdown. 

CIAA Weekly Awards 
  • Justin Fleming was named Defensive Back of the Week for Week one. Fleming had 14 tackles with 11 being 11 being solo tackles.
  • Trevon Hester was named Running Back Player of the Week, while teammate Jamieson Alston was named Linebacker of the Week for Week two.
  • For the second consecutive week, Trevon Hester was named Running Back Player of the Week for week three, while Keith Quick was named Offensive Lineman of the Week for week three, and Gilberto Lorenzana was named Special Teams Player of the Week for week three. 
  • Dante Bowlding was named CIAA Defensive Back of the Week for Week four. Bowlding recorded seven total tackles, (five solo), and also recorded two assists, 1.0 sack netting three yards, and an interception.

HBCU D2 Football Coaches Poll – Week 5 – The Rams came in ranked at #6 for the week.

Up Next
The Rams will hit the road one more time during the regular season as they will travel to Salisbury, North Carolina on October 19th. The Rams will take on Livingstone College, inside Alumni Memorial Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
