WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team made program history Monday, earning its first top-10 ranking in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll at No. 8 ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The Rams received 411 points in the poll released Oct. 27, placing them among the nation's elite programs following a historic 2025-26 campaign. Winston-Salem State is also the only historically Black college or university (HBCU) represented in the preseason top 25.
WSSU enters the upcoming season looking to build on a 28-4 record, a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance. The Rams return eight players from last year's championship squad, providing valuable experience and continuity as they pursue another successful postseason run.
"It is a blessing and an honor to be the only HBCU named to the WBCA preseason poll," the program shared. "It is not an easy accomplishment to be named to the Top 10, and we are very humbled that we were chosen. Thank you to the RAMILY for your constant support."
Head coach
Tierra Terry and the Rams will look to use the historic preseason recognition as motivation entering a season with high expectations. With eight returning players from last year's championship team, Winston-Salem State will rely on its experience and established team chemistry as it looks to defend its conference title and make another deep run in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Grand Valley State claimed the No. 1 spot in the preseason poll with 575 points and 23 first-place votes. Colorado Mesa ranked second, followed by Alabama-Huntsville at No. 3, Indiana (Pa.) at No. 4 and Cal Poly Pomona at No. 5. Texas Woman's ranked sixth, Minnesota State Mankato seventh and Winston-Salem State eighth. Lenoir-Rhyne and Holy Family rounded out the top 10.
The Rams open the 2026-27 season at home Friday, Nov. 13, against Chowan University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside C.E. Gaines Arena.
