Emerging Leaders Seminar sends young professionals on leadership ‘expedition’

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With over 160 interns and graduate assistants at the NCAA Emerging leaders seminar, Winston-Salem State University graduate assistant Keith Quick was glad to be in the numbers.

"I had a wonderful time connecting with some of the brightest emerging leaders in college athletics at the 2026 NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar. Being surrounded by such driven, passionate professionals reaffirmed why spaces like ELS are so important for growth, learning, and community," said Quick.

Quick, along with over 160 interns and graduate assistants from NCAA member schools, conference offices and affiliate organizations, attended the program held Wednesday through Friday. Since 2008, the event annually provides leadership, educational and transitional programming for selected participants. Attendees also participated in community service by leaving encouraging messages and bookmarks in books for children that were later donated to the Catch the Stars Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Indiana basketball legend Tamika Catchings.

Tell us about a key take-away:
The mentorship and leadership from Ashley Jocelyn and the NCAA Leadership Development staff never disappoint. One highlight for me was completing the DISC assessment and having the opportunity to fully understand my results—gaining clarity on my leadership style and how I show up in professional spaces was invaluable.

Tell us about your experience:
What truly made this experience unforgettable was receiving a handwritten letter from my supervisor, Sonya Hurt, while at ELS. Her encouraging words and the poem she included set the tone for my entire experience at NCAA headquarters. It was heartfelt, meaningful, and reminded me why having supportive leadership matters. I also appreciated the chance to reconnect with WSSU alum James Bullock III, who always shares timely advice and wisdom whenever our paths cross.

Overall, ELS 2026 was an incredible experience filled with character development, leadership growth, and intentional networking. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity and would highly recommend this program to any recent graduate or anyone in their first two years working in collegiate athletics.
