PETERSBURG, Va. – The Winston-Salem State University women's tennis team fell 4-0 to Virginia State University in CIAA competition on Thursday afternoon.
The Rams (WSSU) battled throughout the lineup but were unable to overcome a strong start by the Trojans, who secured the doubles point and carried that momentum into singles play.
How It Happened
Virginia State claimed the early 1-0 advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches. The duo of McKinley Battle and Iyana Nickens dropped a tight 4-3 decision at No. 1 doubles, while the Rams fell at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, 6-1 and 6-1, respectively.
In singles play, the Trojans continued to control the match, winning four straight courts to clinch the team victory. Mikayla Stewart (No. 2), Kyla Burns (No. 3), and Iyana Barber (No. 6) each fell in straight sets, while McKinley Battle (No. 1) dropped a competitive opening set before the match was decided.
