CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Winston-Salem State University senior defensive back Chancellor Smith has been named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Defensive Back of the Week, the conference announced Monday evening.

"Well deserved for our natural leader on and off the field," WSSU head coach Tory Woodbury said. "Chancellor gives his all throughout the week, so it's easy to see it pay off on Saturdays. I'm extremely proud and grateful to be able to coach him his last year."

Smith earned the honor following his performance against Virginia State on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Va.

The senior recorded a team-high 13 tackles, including eight solo tackles and five assisted tackles, in the Rams' 49-19 loss to the Trojans. Smith was active throughout the contest, recording tackles in each quarter as the WSSU defense faced a high-powered Virginia State offense.

Smith's 13 tackles were the most by a WSSU player in the contest and helped anchor the Rams' defensive effort throughout the game.

The CIAA weekly honor recognizes Smith's performance against one of the conference's top offenses as WSSU continues conference play.
