Rams Drop Home Opener to Mars Hill, 17-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University football team (0-2) was held scoreless Saturday night, falling 17-0 to Mars Hill University in its 2026 home opener inside Bowman Gray Stadium.

The Rams and Lions battled through a scoreless first half, with Winston-Salem State's defense keeping Mars Hill off the scoreboard despite the Lions controlling much of the early offensive production. Mars Hill missed field-goal attempts of 21 and 30 yards during the second quarter.

Quarterback Deiondre Goldston completed 7-of-14 passes for 61 yards, while Kendall McKoy added four completions for 20 yards.

Jamison Funderburk led the Rams on the ground with 36 yards on 11 carries. Funderburk also recorded two receptions for 19 yards.

Through the air, Sean Walker Jr. paced Winston-Salem State with four receptions for 37 yards. Funderburk added two catches for 19 yards, while Taron Biles-Walker finished with one reception for 14 yards.

Mars Hill broke the scoreless tie with 6:25 remaining in the third quarter when Rayvon Durant broke free for a 52-yard rushing touchdown. The Lions added a 22-yard field goal from Matthias Newsome early in the fourth quarter before Durant scored his second touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run with 2:34 remaining to make the final 17-0.

Defensively, Camden Martin and Maurice Odom led the Rams with 11 tackles apiece. Christopher "CJ" Brown, Yetristan Brown, Bryce Johnson and Chancellor Smith each recorded six tackles, while Smith added three pass breakups.

Caden Hilemon recorded Winston-Salem State's lone interception, while Davian Lapointe finished with five tackles and two tackles for loss.

Punter Anthony Barrett averaged 37.2 yards on eight punts, including a long of 47 yards.
